The Gruffalo & Friends with Julia Donaldson

24th February 2024

Julia Donaldson, award-winning author and former Children’s Laureate, came to Chichester on Saturday 24th February 2024 to bring to life the stories that have been such a huge part of our collective childhood for the past thirty years.

Julia, along with her husband Malcolm and a small band of actors, brought their unique and uplifting show to The Minerva Theatre to support the work of local charity, the Children’s BookFest (CBF).

Since Julia’s first book, ‘A Squash and a Squeeze,’ was published in 1993, her stories have woven their way through our homes and hearts, with her rhymes becoming part of the day-to-day language for so many of us. So, the experience of watching the woman who created these gems re-enacting them live on stage, with 300 people per show being word-perfect with their call and response, was reminiscent of a rock legend playing their greatest hits to an intimate gathering of devoted fans.

With so many wonderful stories to choose from, it must have been difficult to narrow them down for a live performance, but ‘The Baddies,’ was a particular favourite, as was, of course, ‘The Gruffalo,’ (with a starring performance from the OG himself) and audiences were also introduced to Julia’s latest book for MacMillan, ‘The Bower Bird.’

Local independent bookseller, One Tree Books, had a huge selection of Julia’s books on offer, and the joyful buzz of excited children waiting to meet Julia, whilst being serenaded by her husband Malcolm on his guitar, was infectious. Children and their grown-ups queued patiently, in some cases for over an hour and a half, for the chance to have their books signed by the woman herself.

Successful picture books are always greater than the sum of their parts, and the extraordinary illustrator Axel Scheffler, who has worked with Julia since the beginning, also showed his support for CBF by donating some limited edition, signed prints of an original artwork to celebrate the occasion.

Support from authors, illustrators, volunteers, teachers and parents is key to enabling the work of CBF. Research consistently shows how vital book ownership is to opening the portal to worlds we don’t yet inhabit, to ideas we have yet to encounter, and to possibilities we might not otherwise consider. Yet, shockingly, research by the National Literacy Trust shows that 1 in 15 children live in homes without any books at all.

We strive to address this via our signature BookFests, by providing books to local foodbanks and through Outreach initiatives. Since the charity started in 2019, CBF has gifted over 20,000 new books to thousands of children and there are many more waiting for our help.

With thanks to Julia and Malcolm Donaldson, Joanna Hutt, James Huntington, Louisa Sheridan and Jo Hardacre for their support.
